Pride and Prejudice: A Contemporary View

The hardest thing about this project, in my opinion, was in fact not the kind of research it took to arrive at the conclusions presented in this paper, but the process of grouping them together into something that might make any sense at all. I have come to learn that there are so many parallels between Pride and Prejudice and its modern counterpart, You've Got Mail, and to a lesser extent The Shop Around the Corner, that putting them together involves more than one might imagine. In any case, I found that You've Got Mail is more of a combination of The Shop Around the Corner and Pride and Prejudice than The Shop Around the Corner is related to Pride and Prejudice at all. In reviewing Pride and Prejudice and You've Got Mail, I found that most major aspects of the film are similar to issues presented in Pride and Prejudice. However, the frequently rearranged presentation of these events when portrayed in You've Got Mail initially led me to see them as different. This had more to do with the concept of role reversal than anything else. Nevertheless, there were a few minor differences, each of which, along with the major and minor similarities between the novel and the film, I will thoroughly examine and discuss in this essay. Above all, I would have to say without a doubt that You've Got Mail is a successful adaptation to Pride and Prejudice, with the single most powerful connection between the two being the expression of a changing society. As would be obvious to any viewer, reader, or analyst, this is done successfully through the characters of Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox, who in different ways represent Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwillam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. When I say different I mean that Kathleen is not always Elizabeth and Joe is not necessarily Darcy. In fact, when compared to their corresponding social situations in Pride and Prejudice, Kathleen is Mr. Darcy, while Joe represents Elizabeth. I say this because I realize that when we give our sympathy to Kathleen's plight in You've Got Mail and to Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, thereby connecting the two characters, we are not thinking of how readers of Pride and Prejudice when it was written felt when reading it. In their opinion, it had to have been Darcy who faced the dilemma, not Elizabeth. You see, in both the book and novel the traditional ways, whether they are of Victorian Era England or the Upper West Side, are being inevitably replaced by new social or economic standards. In Pride and Prejudice the noble class was sinking as the middle class rose, with the middle class seen much like a modern chain store in comparison to a classic book shop that had been in business for generations. It is in this way that Elizabeth's family is shown as a virus in aristocratic England much as the FoxBooks franchise is to proud Upper West Siders. Not only was the societal situation of Pride and Prejudice well represented in You've Got Mail, but also FoxBooks perfectly mirroring the â€Å"invasion† of a noble family by one with disgraceful connections played it out with the takeover of Kathleen's shop. It was this and a difference of manners that initially kept the characters apart in both books but was conquered by a growth in their understanding of each other. In any case, the characters of You've Got Mail help show the connection to the novel's societal aspects mostly in that of Frank, Kathleen's boyfriend. He represents the values in a character that were shown in one like Lady Catherine, in which he despises the idea that the new world and technology are taking over. â€Å"You think this machine's your friend, but it's not† are his initial words to Kathleen about her use of the computer. As a part of modern society, he hates it, and because of her situation, she is somehow expected to share those feelings. She does not, which is a large part of her connection to Darcy's character, which is expected by all, including Elizabeth, to be proud and to never associate with those of a less noble blood than his own. Kathleen's breakup with Frank broadcasts their internal differences, just as Darcy is written as different from most aristocrats in his ignoring class lines in recognizing morals. Kathleen Kelly is always shown as the heroine in You've Got Mail because of her struggle to keep her small, pricey shop open in the shadow of the ‘terrible' FoxBooks Store. In the same way, Darcy can be seen as courageous in his internal conflict of whether or not to break away from social standards placed upon him by his family. These same expectations are in some form placed on Kathleen, who runs her store in her mother's shadow. She loves the store, but in some ways is shown as one of those in You've Got Mail who is the least affected by its closing. The people who most actively wish the shop to stay open are those who have grown up with it in their neighborhood. As Kathleen declares in a fit of passionate anger to Joe, â€Å"People may not remember me, either, but lots of people remember my mother. In comparing Kathleen's noble struggle to that of Darcy's, I am not discrediting Elizabeth Bennet as the heroine of Pride and Prejudice, instead I am simply comparing two characters whose situations in life compare, regardless of anything else. Although the economic situations in You've Got Mail closely reflect the social issues in Pride and Prejudice, there are still many more similarities between the book and the movie, and also between the video and the film it was originally based upon, The Shop Around the Corner. The one main similarity between all three was that of the love-hate relationship that defines Darcy and Elizabeth and is mirrored in Joe and Kathleen and Kralik and Klara in The Shop Around the Corner. In Pride and Prejudice, Darcy and Elizabeth are at first and throughout most of the book kept apart by their conflicting social ranks, just as Joe and Kathleen are kept apart by their business competition. The characters of Kralik and Klara actually help explain the two other relationships because just as they are kept apart by competition in the workplace, they keep in touch through letters without knowing who the other one is. They hate each other, as do Joe and Kathleen, in person, but both couples evidently have a relationship where despite their feelings that the other is a bad person, they find each others good points online or by post. This is shown in The Shop Around the Corner in a quote from Klara, who says to Kralik, â€Å"Why, I could show you letters that would open your eyes. No, I guess you probably wouldn't understand what's in them. They're written by a type of man so far superior to you it isn't even funny. The same basic statement is made by Kathleen to Joe in You've Got Mail, where she remarks, â€Å"The man who is coming here tonight is completely unlike you. There is not a cruel or ungenerous bone in his body. † This, the fact that Klara reveals that there were times Kralik could have â€Å"swept her off her feet†, and the obvious notion that Joe and Kathleen could get along had they not been â€Å"FoxBooks and The Shop Around the Corner† gives some insight into the more complex characters of Elizabeth and Darcy, who were apparently right for each other all along, but had been kept apart on unfortunate technicalities. Although each couple may have been right for each other, they may have been kept apart by more than just business or class lines. They hurt each other's pride, which was something that could only be caused by bad manners and repaired by good ones. This idea culminates in the scene in Pride and Prejudice where Darcy proposes to Elizabeth for the first time, and in both movies in the cafe scenes where the couple was supposedly to meet for the first time as mail correspondents. In all three, the characters erupt at the others' attack on their pride and become so angry, all reconciliation may seem impossible. From the very beginning, from the first moment, I may almost say, of my acquaintance with you, your manners impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form that groundwork of disapprobation on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed upon to marry. † These words of Elizabeth Bennet affected Darcy in the same way that those of Kathleen and Klara affected Joe and Kralik, respectively. That is to say, it hurt his pride. A lot. In any event, this experience served to make Darcy grow, with respect to manner and his management of pride. The same effect was had on Joe and Kralik, and they forgave Kathleen and Klara in the meantime. This further advanced their relationships eventually leading to all three couples ending up in love with each other despite all odds against them. Manners were an important part of Pride and Prejudice and were reflected in You've Got Mail through communication. Good manners were shown by email while bad ones were apparent in Joe and Kathleen's verbally abusive relationship, their avoidance of each other, and in their misperceptions of the other. In my opinion, the Gardiners, who brought Darcy and Elizabeth together in the book, had a lot to do with the concept of email and manners in You've Got Mail. Their true selves were made clear online, and once Joe learned the truth, he began to see past what had been going on between them and fell in love with Kathleen. She, of course, still had the misperception of him that had been dictated by their economic/social relationship, and even this died away after Joe showed her some of the good manners she had been exposed to throughout their internet relationship. This exact situation was displayed in The Shop Around the Corner, and with a few surface differences, is what happened between Elizabeth and Darcy in Pride and Prejudice after the proposal scene. In all situations, manners were dictated by prejudices laid down by society and in turn altered personal perception, where good manners were untainted by society and bad ones were prejudiced. Therefore, good manners lead to friendly relationships and bad ones lead to conflict. At first, I did not see the same humor in You've Got Mail that had been used in Pride and Prejudice, primarily because I was looking for Jane Austen's personal â€Å"regulated hatred† instead of that of modern culture. It is undisputable that the same satire used in Pride and Prejudice is shown in the character of Patricia Eden, Joe's girlfriend. She represents materialism in her blind yet self-proclaimed insensitivity. When Frank, Kathleen's boyfriend, asks Joe Fox at a party â€Å"how he sleeps at night,† Patricia jumps in and responds, â€Å"I use a great over the counter drug- Ultra Dorm†¦. you wake up without the slightest hangover! † Another time, right before Joe decides to break up with her, four people are stuck in an elevator. Each person talks about what they plan to do if they get out alive. The first two are sincere and have to do with family and relationships. When it is her turn to speak, Patricia says, â€Å"If I ever get out of here, I'm having my eyes lasered. Another character that is humorous and at the same time represents a commentary on society is Gillian, Joe's father's fiancee. She goes to get her eggs harvested in one scene, buys tacky items only because they are expensive, makes passes at Joe, and finally runs off with her daughter's nanny. She and Patricia seem to represent people who in today's world are trendy and have no character whatsoever, as opposed to those in Pride and Prejudice who represent those who are stupid, marry for money, and follow ridiculous customs. They are essentially the same because each shows what seems to be morally wrong with the people in the time period in which each was written. The one factor I did not see in You've Got Mail that reflected a major idea in Pride and Prejudice was feminism. It was apparently groundbreaking at that time for Elizabeth to reject two out of three potentially successful offers of marriage, and I just didn't see any such signs of independence besides Kathleen owning her own store, which I did not see as the same. In any case, You've Got Mail more than anything was a successful contemporary adaptation to Pride and Prejudice, especially in representing the social and economic situations in a variety of ways. You've Got Mail and The Shop Around the Corner were also successful in showing the dynamics of the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth though that of Joe and Kathleen and Klara and Kralik with respect to manners, morals, and romance.

Medical Office Basics: Hoarding

Do you have a problem selling, throwing away, or even recycling things? If you do it is very possible that you may have an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder referred to as Hoarding. Another way to tell if you have this problem is if you shop too much. According to the International OCD Foundation, 3 out of every 4 people shop excessively. While collecting research and reading over signs and symptoms that I will cover later in this paper I realized that I may have an undiagnosed Hoarder in my immediate family. The International OCD Foundation states, â€Å"Hoarding is a complex disorder that is made up of three connected problems: 1) collecting too many items, 2) difficulty getting rid of items and 3) problems with organization. † Of the items hoarded the most common are newspapers and clothes, but also commonly includes containers, junk mail, craft items, books, trash, and in some cases animals. Even collectors can eventually fall into the category of being a Hoarder when their collection becomes so overwhelming that they are no longer able to display their possessions in a safe manner. The clutter in a persons’ dwelling must create a health and safety concern, and also significant distress, in order to truly be categorized as a disorder. It is estimated that as many as 1 in every 20 people have a substantial amount of hoarding problems. The act of Hoarding, cluttering of living spaces and keeping items of little to no value, is most commonly found in older age groups but in rare cases can also be found in adolescents and children as early as 3 years old. The reason that hoarding is found so commonly in the elderly is because the severity of the disorder increases with each decade of life. Hoarding is also found to be more dominant in men than in women. Symptoms of Hoarding are believed to begin in early childhood or adolescence and progress each year without proper therapy. Hoarding is one of only two psychiatric disorders that increase in severity and prevalence as you progress in life, the other is Dementia. There are many consequences that come along with Hoarding, one of the worst being evicted from your home or even your house being ruled as condemned. There was a study done that found 45% of Hoarders could not use their refrigerators, 42% could not use their kitchen sink, 42% could not use this bathtub, 20% cannot use their bathroom sink, and 10% could not use their toilet. In many cases finances also become an immeasurable quandary in a Hoarders life due to paying for storage units for their priceless treasures, buying items to add to their clutter and paying housing fines caused by their property appearing disheveled or having â€Å"lack of curb appeal†. There are four primary characteristics of Hoarding. The first thing you could see is depression or anxiety with a family history of hoarding. Secondly people who hoard have difficult time processing information; these problems can usually be interpreted as having Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder qualities. Third, people who hoard tend to form intense emotional attachments to a wider variety of objects than a person who doesn’t hoard. Hoarders attach human-like qualities to inanimate objects. In other words, asking a Hoarder to get rid of an item is like asking them to get rid of a loved one. The last characteristic is that Hoarders do not want to waste objects or throw away items that could be seen as a loss of opportunity represented by the object. As far as treatments for Hoarding there have not been many medical advances. The only treatments medical professionals have been able to come up with thus far are psychiatric treatments, interventions by friends and family, and prescription medications. Although there are medical professionals hoarders could talk to many times they will come up with reasons to avoid getting help such as, cost of treatment, transportation problems, negative views of mental health, low motivation, and lack of public awareness. Future psychotherapy research may focus more on behavioral (exposure treatment) rather than traditional cognitive therapy principles. If you are concerned that you may have some hoarding tendencies there are various types of tests available online to determine if you are a hoarder and how extreme your case might be. There is a test called Saving Inventory-Revised that only involves a test of 24 questions before revealing your score at the end. Another test that would be useful is called the Clutter Image Rating, this test will give you four picture examples of what hoarding looks like and you compare your house with the pictures given in order to rate at what stage of a Hoarder you are. While researching and writing about this topic I learned many things about hoarding that I had not already known. There are many things about Hoarding that you cannot learn by just watching a show on television such as the different treatments that are offered and the things required to classify someone as a Hoarder. I have now come to the conclusion after comparing pictures of a family member’s home to those on the Clutter Image Rating website and now knowing the requirements to being a Hoarder that I do in fact have an undiagnosed Hoarder in the family. Health literacy and patient safety & role of advance practise nurse Term Paper

Health literacy and patient safety & role of advance practise nurse - Term Paper Example Studies have shown that patient friendly communication and an open attitude to answering questions are the best strategies for helping patients understand medical information, and caring for them more effectively. Health literacy is defined as â€Å"the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions† (Ratzan and Parker, 2000). The first step for an advanced practice nurse to measure levels of health literacy in a patient, is to overcome barriers of communication and create an open shame free environment. An attitude of helpfulness and understanding of his/her problems, and offering an environment of privacy to answer questions and discuss details of history, education and medications, will enhance understanding and a feeling of adequacy in patients. Having a family member present if the patient feels more comfortable, and willingness to answer any questions, even repetitive ones, help instill confidence. An advanced practice nurse needs to take patient backgrounds into account while communicating with them. Things like can they read the instructions on pill boxes or do they recognize them by color? are important indications of the level of health literacy in patients.

Competitive Strategies Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Competitive Strategies - Research Paper Example This paper concentrates on competition between two rival companies, Coca Cola Company and PepsiCo, and the strategies they employ to make sales and increase profits in the soft drink industry. How PepsiCo corporate cultures differ from Coca Cola Company The strategies that the two companies use differ in their method of advertising, search for new markets whether globally or nationally, and uncovering market niche that they can they control easily. Pepsi controls the youth markets for soft drinks in America while Coca Cola concentrates in the others. Coca Cola went global and seized a new market, which Pepsi has been unable to penetrate. These companies also employ the method of cutting costs. Coca Cola uses a lot of money for advertisements compared to Pepsi, which uses relatively a low amount. This helps Pepsi cut costs even though it makes huge profits. These companies also use anti-competitive practices such as exclusive dealing. Pepsi and Coca Cola companies exclusively supply c ertain businesses enterprises with their products and ensure that the rival’s products are not sold (Capparell, 2007). Advertising is crucial as it helps draw attention to a product and enables in the recognition of a company. Coca Cola and Pepsi companies have engaged in many advertisements across the globe in a bid to promote sales of their products (Moses & Vest, 2010). To a certain extent, Coca Cola and Pepsi have produced advertisements with common themes emphasizing on having fun but have continued on different courses over the years (Foster, 2008). Coca Cola leans towards an emotional position of branding while Pepsi maintains an energetic, music-oriented and humorous strategy. Pepsi’s advertisement strategy appeals to a younger audience since they largely use celebrity endorsements thus helping Coca Cola focus on the older generation. Coca Cola’s advertisement strategy ensures that the theme focuses on the global aspect, therefore, attracting a wider arr ay of consumers. Pepsi started its global campaign in 2012, therefore, has not been able to target consumers globally (Emerald Group, 2006). In order to keep pace with each other, both companies have employed different tactics that have seen an increase in sales and profit margin. In order to induce demand for its soft drinks, the Pepsi Company utilizes a pull strategy, employed in its distribution channels. However, this strategy concentrates on the younger generation, which is the main target market for Pepsi. As compared to Coca Cola, Pepsi’ product positioning controls the youth market in terms of demographics. The two companies constantly have to come up with new marketing ideas that help them capture their target markets (Johnson, 2013). How competition has benefited the rival company Due to the intense competition between these companies, innovations have been introduced to give each company an advantage over the other. The two companies have introduced a wide range of new products, which are sold at premium prices. PepsiCo has introduced alternative beverages such as Gatorade and Aquafina, which are sold at high prices. The brands bring high profits to the company due to customer’s brand loyalty that has been built over the years. Coca Cola also introduced numerous alternative beverages brands and they have made profits competing with PepsiCo, as some consumers prefer their products to the other companies (Thompson, 2012). Competition between PepsiCo and Coca

Discussion - Coursework Example Never was I bored to read the essay. The flow is continuous as he moves from one example to another. The logical reasoning through out the essay is right on the money. He does not drift from the main topic at any point of time. The least effective part of the essay for me is that audience that it is addressing. The writer fails to establish who his audience is. At some parts hardcore economists are targeted while some target a lay man. The essay would have been more effective if it had targeted any one section of the larger audience. The author’s thesis is that most of our needs are actually met and we what call needs are not actually our needs. He says that the word need is used in a wrong context. I agree with the author as most of the actual needs that are essential to our survival are actually met. For example, we need at least two meals a day and few liters of water to survive which is already met. Now, if somebody whose basic needs are met says â€Å"I need a burger†, he actually means he wants a burger and not need. Hence, the author’s thesis that most of the needs are actually what we want and are not a necessity is

Now the paper will identify and discuss some of the aspects of Tannahill Model has been chosen for the development of proposed nutrition health programme for schoolchildren in the United Kingdom. Health is a system that is regarded by both the professionals, as well as nonprofessionals as a way of life rather than it being an objective of living. Throughout the history of medical research and pharmacy, several models have been launched and hypothesized; however, none has been effective enough to resolve the plethora of public health deficit that plagues the entire globe. With the rapid globalization, it seems that even health issues have run to an outreached level, which needs to be resolved with proper planning, policies, and right form of protection provided to the society as a whole. â€Å"Health promotion, then, is the active process of disease prevention encompassing educational components, including individual and group change and social influence techniques which, together with environmental, legislative and organizational interventions, make up a range of strategies for

QUESTION SET Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

QUESTION SET - Movie Review Example a. The Powhatan people were Native Americans living in the present day Virginia. These people lived in villages which could be made up of up to one hundred homes. Some of their villages were separated and protected by wooden palisades and had carefully guarded gardens. They were farmers and they sowed corn, peas, beans and sunflowers. The Powhatan lived in confederacy to protect themselves from intrusions. This did not change with the arrival of the English people. b. Among the Powhatan people, it was the tradition for the chief to bow down during the coronation ceremony (500 Nations). This did not happen with Wahusenaka who refused to bow down because of his hatred for the English intruders. This heavily contrasts with Smith’s adoption ceremony where bowing was witnessed. Wahusenaka’s refusal to bow made the ceremony to end on a bad note. a. The Squanto story matters today as it explores the origin of the collaboration between the Native Americans and the English people. When the English people arrived in their Mayflower ship, it was Squanto who welcomed them and taught them how to survive in the land. Sammoset and Massasoit fit into the story because of the contribution they made towards ensuring the peace and the long standing collaboration between the two groups (500 Nations). In the story thanksgiving came about when Squanto taught the foreigners the need to feast together after harvest was gathered. a. Wampanoag treated the English people differently compared to the Powhatans. Massasoit’s Wampanoag had a treaty with the foreigners in which they were not to engage in any kind of activities which would harm one another. This created a spirit of peace and collaboration. b. The English people expected and were confident that Wampanoag would adhere to the English rules and customs due to the treaty which was in place (500 Nations). The leaders were also full of wisdom and prudence and thus they would strive to ensure

The objective of this qualitative study will be to explore the Thesis

The objective of this qualitative study will be to explore the influence of socialization and ambition may have on the under-representation of women in the U.S. Congress - Thesis Example Children will also identify with the political ideologies that are supported by their parents.1 It has been proven that the children of educated parents tend to support ambitious characters. Since children at this stage tend to identify with their families, it is this support that can inspire a female child to harbor dreams of being an achiever in later life. In addition, parents from higher socioeconomic settings are usually more concerned with political developments. They also expose their children to political systems and encourage them to develop opinions about various political aspects. The daughters of parents who dynamically speak about politics with their offspring tend to be more assertive in stating their views about various political functions. Family discussion patterns that include parents cheering their children when they express their personal political opinions are frequently better oriented toward participation in public affairs. Conversely, there are parents that do not encourage their children to develop political and other views that are in any way different from their own. These parents emphasize on the significance of being respectful and promoting social harmony by maintaining that their children have to avoid any deep arguments or give in immediately they sense that the person they are arguing with is unfriendly. Daughters from such families are usually more likely to embrace traditional roles that call for them to be accepting of other’s opinion. Daughters from socio-oriented family units are usually less critical of facts, and experience few arguments in the home. Such realities encourage them, from a young age, to value social harmony over exploring new fields which may bring considerable challenges and conflicts.2 Moreover, the daughters from families that support open communication and the development of distinctive ideas are encouraged to be more daring and to engage in critical thinking and

The Invisible Man - Essay Example Bledsoe, a Black just like him, who he trusted fooled him, giving him falls hopes to which he has dedicated his life: â€Å"To Whom It May Concern: Keep This Nigger-Boy Running (33). Yet it is in his disillusionment that he begins to confront the lies he naively accepted, driving him to search and carve for his own name. He then worked against the system, he once believed. But again, he is betrayed. He begins to understand the opposing social forces that drive him to invisibility. So he receded from all these, living underground in a â€Å"hole in the basement† (7). He begins then to understand what is meant for an invisible man, like him, become visible. Yet with all these conflicting experiences, he is not still sure how to fathom his grandfather’s parting words to his father: â€Å"Live with your head in the lion’s mouth. Strategic management Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Strategic management - Article Example Issues such as higher volume of patients catered through limited capacity in the emergency room as well as the lack of adapting new technologies have made it relatively difficult for the hospital to keep pace with the larger hospitals. Recruiting and retaining skilled physicians as well as nursing staff at relatively affordable cost was another operational issue faced by hospital. Due to the structural changes in the healthcare industry overall availability of the physicians declined due to reduction in their wages. It is also important to note that the increasing influence of the managed care organizations is also sited as one of the operational issues faced by EMC. The overall influence of the managed care therefore is forcing the hospitals to offer services at reduced costs. Strategic Options Available One of the key elements to be explored before EMC can make any strategic move is the understanding of the external environment of hospital. Over the period of time the changes which have taken place largely were regulated as well as driven by competition. A closer analysis of the competitive environment suggests that most of the players were non-profit organizations with focus on developing extensive network to gain the competitive edge in the market. The essential nature of the competition therefore may force EMC to look for the options which can allow it to exploit the established network of different direct as well as indirect players in the market influencing the overall outcome in the market. One of the most important strategic actions which EMC can take is to merge with any competing HMO in order to take advantage of the core competencies of other organization. Since most of the organizations are non-profit organizations therefore hospital can also achieve the required level of synergy with relative ease. Further, the utilization of the existing technology of the bigger player would enable it to overcome its traditional weakness of adapting to the new te chnology in slow manner. This would further allow the hospital to become better equipped to reduce the number of complains also. It is also important to note that the merger with any other HMO will also provide an opportunity to gain access to the larger base of medical and health care services providers such as physicians and nurses. This would therefore can allow broadening the overall scope of services offered under one roof. Another important strategic option which may be considered is to maintain the status quo and initiate a program of change. President Moeen however, would require drastic changes in the way hospital is managed. This would require taking a holistic view of the operational challenges faced by the hospital and than taken on a systematic strategic approach to utilize the core competencies of the hospital to gain the required momentum to achieve the growth. Recommendations In order to overcome the operational challenges as well as to make EMC a competitive force w ithin the area, President Moeen can take on the drastic changes to further rationalize the cost while at the same time maintaining the status quo. This would involve looking for new ways and methods to further rationalize the cost while at the same time ensuring that the hospital continues to expand. In order to achieve this, it would be better if the hospital look for more financing

Home School vs Public School Essay Example for Free

Home School vs Public School Essay Have you ever wondered what the difference is between home schooling your children and sending them to a public school? How are there learning environments different and similar? How do they teach the state standards compared to teaching them yourself? What are the disadvantages and advantages of home schooling and public school? Doing the research yourself can be a waste of time sometimes or if you don’t have the time. The learning environment of public school is kind of a hassle. They teach the students as a whole, the students can ask for help if they are having trouble with what they are learning. Also public school pushes the students to do their best in class to make sure that they understand what they are working on. The teachers also allow the student to go to the library to learn more helpful things in life. If they can read on their own why not give them the chance to read as many books as they want and not limit them. Some teachers want to challenge the children in their reading and it also improves your children’s reading score and lets them understand and comprehend more words. Also public school is very good at socializing your children with other children there age and they make friends to play with each other. Home schooling environment is more on the pace of the adult that is teaching the children. The adult also chooses the setting to have the children in, as well as the environment could be in a loud place or a calm relaxing environment. Messing with the environment of the children can make it so that they end up misbehaving and not listening due to them being stressed. Home schooling background also makes it harder to socialize your children to other children there age and you could also cause issues with other children and your children. All schools follow a state standard that all students are supposed to pass without ease. Public schools follow a chart that states what the students need to learn that week, and that is what they should be learning and have it learned by the end of the that lesson week. If any student doesn’t completely understand the lessons that are told to leave the room and to go see a different teacher to have them explain it to them. As well if you were to fall behind in your school work, they normally don’t help you make it up, they will give you at least two days to get the work turned in or it would be counted as incomplete and that would lower your grade. You would have to get the notes from a friend to understand how to do the assignment, also you get a tutor that is easier to come to your home then to school for one on one learning. When you are the one that is teaching and you can teach at your own pace or the pace that your children want to learn the material. If they are grasping the concept very well without any issues then they could move onto a different lesson. As though there are some students that need the special help and you could be on that lesson or that material for a month. As long as you get the lessons for that whole year done then you would be on tract with the lessons. The advantages of a public school is to have some alone time with yourself and to have time away from the children and be able to run errands and go to doctor appointments without the kids. Being able to be alone in the house without children is the best time to clean and complete your grocery shopping. The disadvantages of public school are all the drama that occurs within the walls of the school. The administrators are also sometimes not the best people to have around your children. Sometimes how they treat their students due to them being out of school very often or if they are having a hard time in school and the teacher doesn’t not want to help. The advantages of home schooling would be having more family time and being able to monitor the progress of the children’s learning ability to read and to understand how to comprehend how they solve the work. Also if the child is sick you wouldn’t have to go pick them up from school, they would already be home. You wouldn’t also have to deal with the drama between your children and other children and the teachers. The disadvantages of home schooling is that you would very rarely get time alone without the children and it could stress you out and make you feel like you have been enclosed in a cocoon. Having the ability to send the children off to school and be able to be your own person and not have to listen to the children whine about something and to get them to understand what it is like to be socialized is all beneficial in the end. Having the ability to completely understand the difference between the two different types of schools that are out there to allow your children to go to and them enjoy either choice that you choose. With people having their own opinions about certain schools why not get the information straight from the information and based on what the opinions say. Having the feeling that you did your research and your children are getting the education that you would like them to have it a good feeling. Finding the right reasons and the wrong reasons for sending your children to a school that you have looked at is better than not knowing about it at all.

The supernatural aspects of Macbeth Essay Example for Free

The supernatural aspects of Macbeth Essay In my essay I am going to be writing about the Supernatural aspects of Macbeth. I will be referring closely to Act 1 Scene 3, Act 1 Scene 5 and Act 4 Scene 1. In Shakespeares day people were obsessed with witchcraft. Shakespeare added supernatural elements to the play to grab the audiences attention right from the beginning. This includes opening (Act 1 Scene 1) Macbeth with three witches, with immediately establishes the influence of the supernatural. They are discussing where they will meet Macbeth to tell him his future. In Act 1 Scene 3, the three witches are talking about the death of a sea captain, whilst waiting for Macbeth. Macbeth arrives with Banquo, and each of the three witches has something different to tell Macbeth. The first witch says All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! , the second witch says All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! , and the third witch says All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter! Macbeth is very confused and begins to question what the witches had said to him. Then, the three witches disappear. This would have caused a gasp in the audience in Shakespeares day because of the Supernatural phenomena. This basically means that the witches can tell the future, and this scares the audience. In Act 1 Scene 5, Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth, telling her of the witches predictions. She is a very ambitious woman and will make sure that the prediction will be fulfilled. When she hears that King Duncan is on the way to the castle, she calls upon the evil spirits to help her carry out the murder of King Duncan. She says; Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty! Make thick my blood; stop up the access and passage to remorse, when she says unsex me here, she is asking the spirits to take away her femininity because she wants to have the strength of a man. She also says Stop up the access and passage to remorse which means she is asking the spirits to take away the emotion guilt so that she cannot feel bad about what she has done or have doubts. A Shakespearean audience would find this part of the play very shocking because this was probably the part of The Supernatural that they knew least about. In Act 4, Scene 1 the witches are preparing a cauldron whilst waiting for the arrival of Macbeth. Hecate (The head witch) comes to make sure that all is ready whilst the other witches seal the charm/spell. Macbeth then arrives commanding the witches to tell him what he wants to know. If you asked people in the modern day what a common thing for a witch to say is, they would most probably say Double, double toil and trouble. Shakespeare added this to the play because he knew that it would leave an effect on the audience. The witches show Macbeth four apparitions. The first apparition is a Helmeted Head, which warns Macbeth to be cautious of Macduff. The Second apparition is a child covered in blood, which tells Macbeth that no man born from woman can harm him. The third apparition is a child crowned with a tree in his hand; this tells Macbeth that he is safe until Birnham Wood moves to Dunsinane. The fourth and last apparition, is a show of eight kings, the last with a glass in his hand; Banquo following. This shows Macbeth that Banquos descendants will be crowned king. This means that the witches were right because it comes true at the end of the play. On a modern stage, Macbeth would be shown with a lot of electrical sound effects, lighting, smoke machine ECT. But in the Shakespearean day, there wasnt anything like that so people would have to create their own sound effects, and have to wait until a certain time of day to set the scene. In conclusion, there are many supernatural aspects to Macbeth. This leaves the audience is left confused whether the Supernatural is real or not and have to make up their own minds. Smoking and Urinary Bladder Carcinoma

Smoking and Urinary Bladder Carcinoma Abstract Method : Literature review Background : Urinary bladder carcinoma is one of the most prevalent tumors woldwide  and smoking is one of its major risk factor ,hence studying the relationship between smoking and urinary bladder carcinoma is of great importance Results : Relationship between smoking and urinary bladder carcinoma is not clear although recent studies has shown that it might be related to the VEGF , apoptosis , urinary ph and causes mutation in the DNA. There is equal risk between males and femlesin relation to urinary bladder carcinoma related smoking. Results have shown that the risk of smoking is more apparent in the current smokers than non smokers and water pipe smoking has a borderline risk. Conclusion: Smoking is a major risk factor in urinary bladder carcinoma with equal risk in males and females , cessation of smoking decreases the risk to almost normal keywords : Smoking, urinary bladder carcinoma , risk factor , pathogenesis Methodology literature review made by searching PubMed with following restrictions: 5 years , humans , free full article and English Background Urinary bladder carcinoma is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, the seventh most common .In North America and Europe is considered the eleventh most common cancer (3), in Egypt it is the most common malignancy in males.(6) Therefore studying the risk factors for Urinary bladder carcinoma is important to decrease the prevalence and incidence, risk factors include Bilhariziasis, aniline dye. Smoking is considered one of the major risk factors for urinary bladder carcinoma . Results Although the exact relationship between smoking and urinary bladder carcinoma is still unclear, smoking is one of the major and important risk factors for developing of urinary bladder carcinoma. Tobacco smoking contain a lot of the carcinogenic agents like poly cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic amines, substances that are excreted by the kidney, known to be harmful to the urinary tract, and cause bladder cancer secondary to genetic damage. Studies have shown that smoking increases the risk to get bladder carcinoma by 6 times and it is responsible for 50 % of bladder carcinoma , it is more prevalent in developing countries due to the diffuse spread of this ugly habit, the easiness of getting it and the laxity of the governments to fight it . (3) After filtering of these carcinogenic gents through the urinary tract, it is stored into the urinary bladder which damages its lining epithelium and make transitional cell mutation. Tobacco smoking is considered as the initiator for the carcinogenesis. Many proteins are showen to be a part of the angiogenesis process in the developing of carcinoma likeP53 and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) which showed to be the main one in this process by increasing the vascular permeability and inducing endothelial cell migration, So the VEGF helps in the progression of the cancer, studies have shown that the degree of severity of bladder carcinoma is directly related to degree of expression of the VEGF. (4) Studies have shown that apoptosis has higher effect in urinary bladder carcinoma related to smoking more than VEGF, apoptosis is mainly under control of P53 gene which is found to be highly mutated in urinary bladder carcinoma.(4) Cigarette smoking increases the acidity of urine which causes compounds like Glucuronide conjugates of 4-aminobiphenyl and its N-hydroxy metabolite to be hydrolyzed, and this causes DNA damage and mutation .(1) A recent study has shown that urine ph is not a good indicator in ex_smokers or non smokers ,while urine ph is strongly related to bladder carcinoma in current smokers , experimentally not proven by studies yet that changing urine ph that decrease the hazardous affect of smoking related to bladder carcinoma (1) Studies showed that cigarette smoking increases the prevalence of urothelial carcinoma to 77% and sqamaeous cell carcinoma to 69% among men. Also those studies showed that the number of cigarettes smoked per day and risk of urothelial carcinoma, between years smoked and risk of urothelial carcinoma, and between pack-years and risk of urothelial carcinoma were observed. On the other hand former cigarette smokers have no relation between the number of cigarettes smoked per day and risk of urothelial carcinoma, between years smoked and risk of urothelial carcinoma, and between pack-years and risk of urothelial carcinoma. Researches have shown that those who are smoking water pipe have borderline relationship to the urothelial carcinoma but not with the sqamaseous cell carcinoma. There was no dose-relationship between risk of urothelial carcinoma and number of hagars smoked per day, duration of smoking, or Hagar-year. Patients who have schistosomiasis and smoke have no additional risk for urinary bladder carcinoma.(2) A study has been made in New England shown equal risk for urinary bladder carcinoma between men and woman. it also shown that pack per year and intensity of smoking have reached the plateau according to the risk but not the duration of smoking, this plateau has been observed in many cancer related smoking . Smoking for a longer time is more hazardous than heavy smoking for a shorter duration. An explanation for the observed plateau is the difference in inhalation pattern , meaning that if u inhaled less this means less exposure to carcinogens per cigarette and subsequently less damage . (5) Conclusion Scientists are still unclear about the precise pathogenesis of smoking related urinary bladder carcinoma but studies have shown that smoking increases the risk by 6 times and cause about that 50 % of all urinary bladder carcinoma with equal incidence of males and females . Studies shown that angiogenesis plays an important role in increasing the progression of urinary bladder carcinoma by the VEGF which increases the vascular permeability and induce endothelial cell damage. The degree of expression of the VEGF is strongly related to the degree of severity of the urinary bladder carcinoma. A lot of important compounds like Glucuronide conjugates of 4-aminobiphenyl and its N-hydroxy metabolite are hydrolyzed by the acidic urine of the smoker. Recent research showed a strong correlation between the urine ph and current smokers but there is no relation between the urine ph and the former cigarette smoker. A study showed that number of cigarette per day, duration of smoking and smoking index have a very high effect on the risk of urinary bladder carcinoma in current smokers but they have a lesser effect on the risk in the former smokers. On the other hand water pipe smokers have a borderline risk factor for urinary bladder carcinoma. There was no dose-relationship between risk of urothelial carcinoma and number of hagars smoked per day, duration of smoking, or Hagar-year. Longtime smoking is proved to be more dangerous than heavy smoking for shorter time in relation to urinary bladder carcinoma ,the pack per year and the interxity of smoking have reached a plateau in the risk possibly due to the differnce in the inhaltion patterns whereas the duration hasn;t reached a plateau. In case of duration the relationship is pretty simple and obvious, the longer u smoke ,the more likely hood to get cancer, and also justified longer smoking means longer periods of carcinogenic substances to take effect Recommendation for future research Studies has to made to detect the exact pathogenesis of smoking on urinary bladder carcinoma. Also research has to be made to explain the plateau observed in some research References 1) Urinary pH, cigarette smoking and bladder cancer risk 2) Cancer epidemiology ,biomarkers and prevention 3) Cause–effect? Understanding the risk factors associated with bladder cancer 4) Expressional evaluation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) protein in urinary bladder carcinoma patients exposed to cigarette smoke 5) A Case – Control Study of Smoking and Bladder Cancer Risk: Emergent Patterns Over Time 6) Incidence analyses of bladder cancer in the Nile delta region of Egypt

Anti-bribery laws in the U.S: Ethics and Airbus Essay -- internationa

International business is risky especially when companies involved play by a different set of rules. Knowing the differences in culture, politics and the primary legal environments of a host country, allows the companies to conduct business and make quality decisions based on the business climate, creating a marketing mix specific to each country and region (CSU, module 3, 2014). Detailed research helps companies create a solid marketing mix, but does not guarantee that the obstacles of payoff’s and bribery won’t hinder the outcome. Below the surface level of many sales negotiations, like those seen in our case study of Boeing and Airbus, are driven not on their marketing mix, quality, reputation or reach, but rather on power, bribery, politics and corruption, which plays a very real role in international business negotiations. Anti-bribery laws in the U.S. were established to prevent the rampant corruption exhibited in the Airbus case study. Similar anti-corruption laws do not exist in many of the host countries the U.S. does business with. Host county’s laws and regulations take on different forms especially when power, money and politics are involved, manipulating or creating a new set of rules to benefit their own selfish needs. Savvy sales negotiators, like those at Airbus, seek opportunities through loop holes, off shore accounts and large sums of bribery money, to entice country officials or others with the authority to make purchases to commit to Airbus. A more uniform worldwide approach to international laws needs to be adapted, implemented and more importantly enforced, so all companies involved can conduct fair business practices under the same set of rules. Legal or Illegal who Benefits Airbus and... ...d sets the foundation for companies to mitigate disputes through conciliation, arbitration, or, as a last resort, litigation. Most international businesspeople prefer a settlement through arbitration rather than by suing a foreign company (Cateora, Gilly & Graham, 2013). Based on marketing strategy, had Airbus adopted anti bribery laws prior to the many cases in question, the outcome might not be favorable to them. It would not have been in the best interest of Airbus to follow commonly accepted business practices established by the U.S.. Works Cited Cateora, P., Gilly, M., & Graham, J. (2013). Healthcare and Drugs in America Essay -- Research Papers Health Medici

Healthcare and Drugs in America It is no secret that the cost of American healthcare is on the rise. Already the nation is spending about $1.65 trillion a year on healthcare. That represents 15 percent of gross domestic product, the total output of goods and services. It consumes one-fourth of the federal budget, more than defense. (Allan Rubin) This is due to the factors of expensive technology, less stringent HMO cost management, and more specifically to this paper, rapidly rising drug costs. Surveying nearly 3,000 employers, Mercer Human Resource Consulting finds that their health-benefit costs rose 10.1 percent this year, while inflation hovered around 2 percent. And as the research and development of these drugs continue to outpace inflation, most Americans will continue to pay for this trend. How so? There are two main reasons for this phenomenon. First of all the U.S has highly favorable patent laws toward these drug companies, prohibiting normal market competition for long periods of time. These monopolies allow manufacturers to charge several hundred percent above (world) market prices. (Dean Baker and Noriko Chatani) Some pharmaceutical companies have even been accused of delaying generic drug patents through litigation, even bribery in order to keep their drug prices high. It encourages a behavior of rent seekers. And these tactics prove highly lucrative. For example the drug Cardizem, used for blood pressure and hypertension reduction, had $700 million in sales in the 11 months the generic drug was kept off the market. This also causes generic brands to rise in cost. According to IMS Health, pharmaceutical information companies, the price for generic drugs are increasing almost twice as fast as prices f... ...Noriko (2002) Promoting Good Ideas on Drugs: The Relative Efficiency of Patent and Public Support for Bio-Medical Research October 11, 2002, http://www.cepr.net/promoting_good_ideas_on_drugs.htm â€Å"Buying prescription Medicines Online: A Consumer Safety Guide,† available online at http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/consumer/buyonline/guide.htm Francis, David R. The Ahmanson Ranch Development :: Ventura Country Environmental Essays

The Ahmanson Ranch Development It all started back in 1989 when Home Savings of America announced to build a giant new community consisting of 3,050 homes, two schools, two hotels, two golf courses and 400,000 square feet of commercial and industrial areas on the 5,400-acre Ahmanson Ranch located at the eastern end of Ventura county, adjacent to Los Angeles County. Even though the Ahmanson Ranch has been owned by Home Savings of America since 1963, the nature remained undisturbed all these past years. The ranch has become one of the important habitats for barely surviving native organisms including threatened or endangered species. For this and other important reasons, an organization, Friends of Ahmanson Ranch, was formed to stop the development with the support from other environmental organizations, local legislatures, politicians and public. Almost seven years have passed since the beginning of this issue, but the conflict still remain unsolved. What is interesting about this issue is the diversity in the reas on which the Friends of Ahmanson Ranch claims for protecting the Ahmanson Ranch from development. They point out a variety of reason, and they are not necessarily environmental opinion. First, the reasons of opposition starts from visible things such as plants and living organisms. President of the Native Plant Society San Gabriel Chapter, Melanie Baer, states that the wild grassland ecosystem of Agoura Hills located in the Ahmanson Ranch provides an important habitat for almost-extinct native plant species called Purple needle-grass, or Stipa pulchra. She also suggests that the mitigation of this plant will not be successful due to its difficulty and poor peripheral environment, such as golf course, of the mitigation site. Similaly, Dr. Barbara J. Collins, professor of biology at California Lutheran University, argues that the environmental impact report prepared for the development was inadequate and she points out the importance of the oak savannah along a North-facing slope of Lakey Mesa in the Ahmanson Ranch. According to her opinion, these oak trees are about 200 to 300 years old valley oaks and they are very sensitive species. A large portion of these oaks wi ll be removed, and the remaining will most likely not survive the environmental changes they will go through due to its sensitive nature. In addition, these plants create crucial habitat for other living organisms such as birds, mammals, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles. Some of them are even listed in the Federal and State endangered and threatened species lists.

Negative and Positive Sides

Anything that exists has both negative and positive sides of it. What we have to look at however, is if the positive side outweighs the negative side of it. Most of the time people are blind to the positive side and only look at the negative side of things. This is also similar when it comes to hip hop and rap music. Hip hop has it negative side and the positive sides as well. One of the main negative issues associated with hip hop and drugs is usually the issue of its influence on and the promotion of drug use. Drugs are usually the main topic that is discussed in most of the hip hop songs and rap music. Marijuana for one is one of the main things that is discussed and sung of in many hip hop and rap music. Cocaine, another drug is also one topic that has been sung of by hip hop artists and rappers. Cocaine for example has been affiliated with rap since the year 1983. Since then, there has been a ton of rap songs that have actually promoted drug use. For example the song, â€Å"Young, Wild, and Free† by Wiz Khalifa is one that promotes the use of drugs. This can be a very bad influence on its target, that is, the teenage fan base. This is also an awful way to market ones music since it make it seem okay to use drugs and alcohol. Sadly though, the most people affected by this message are the teenagers who are the largest percentage of our population that listens to this kind of music. This can influence them to join the drug abused and even start the use of alcohol. Some other drugs that are mentioned in these songs include mushrooms, hash, purple pills and heroine most of which can be very harmful to the health of a person.Another negative side of hip hop music is that it has an influence on the sex lives of the youths. Nowadays, a lot of hip hop and rap music videos have a lot of sexual scenes in them. This in turn has an influence on the sexual decision that the youths make whenever they watch these videos. They tend to think that it is okay to intimate with whoever they want to despite the number of people. This has led to an increase in the risk of early pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Hip hop and rap music sometimes also promotes violence especially among teenagers. Hip hop music are mostly full of lyrics that depict people who break the law as cool and classy people. Rap music also has a negative view toward the police and the authorities. Most of the time their lyrics are full of hate for the police and have praise for people who go to jail in the name of their hate towards the police. This has an influence on the teenagers who may be tempted to think that escaping from the police and breaking the law is the new â€Å"cool† in town. Most of them may end up being killed or being jailed for petty crimes they see as cool. On the other hand though, hip hop has a lot of good and positive sides as well. First of all hip hop and rap music is unifier and an education channel. Hip hop stared as a subculture among the African Americans but has now become a global culture. As a matter of fact seventy five percent of the people listening to hip hop music are non-blacks. Hip hop has been able to unify millions of youths across the world. Nowadays due to hip hop, there has been the rise of street style dressing that has been depicted form the hip hop artists. This style of dressing has been adapted by the youths who are given a sense of identity by theses fashion trends. Hip hop and rap music has also been very vital in the promotion of political and social awareness. Rap music educates people on very many diverse perspectives and has been used to raise a lot of social issues. Rap has been used as a means for people to use to freely speak concerning their opinions on social and political issues. Through this, it engages the youths into becoming aware and concerned of their opinions and issues. This is very vital in enlightening the youth on the world they live in and the challenges that they are faced with in society and how they can change the situation for the better. One issue that hip hop and rap has helped to create awareness is the issue of racial discrimination and the importance of believing in one's dreams.Another positive side of rap is that it gives hope to the people who listen to it. Many rappers rap about poverty and the struggles they went through in their upbringing. When they become successful, they share their stories about beating obstacles and struggling to reach the top. This can give a lot of teenagers hope and can challenge them to strive to be the best. This is because if the rapper could make it, they too can. Through understanding and education, rap music has been a tool to spur social awareness in many communities. Rap music has been used to speak against violence and guns among other aspects of life. Most artists communicate a message of peace and anti-violence in their songs. Rappers like the late Tupac Shakur were most of the time criticized for painting a bleak picture of the urban America through their music. However, such lyrics usually brought awareness to the social problems faced by the country, particularly in the inner city. It is crystal clear that hip hop and rap music serves a greater purpose in society. It does more good than harm. Hip hop has been mechanism that gives a voice to the voiceless. It has become a tool to shape the youths on how to tackle the challenges and obstacles they meet in their lives. Hip hop has also been a toll to unite people from the many walks of life. Hip hop is more than just music. It is a culture that unites the world; it gives an identity to those who feel like they don't have one. Above all, it is good entertainment. Hip hop is thus very much relevant and useful to the society of today.
